Ukai is a small village in Gujarat State where an important dam is situated on the river Tapi. Most of its population comprises of tribals. To help the poor tribal students of this area and other students from different states of India, Kumar Chhatralay in Ukai was established by Pramukh Swami Maharaj in September 1985. It aims to provide an ideal academic and moral ambience for the students. The serene, pollution free environment and the state of the art facilities make the Chhatralay a veritable academic and moral oasis.



Annual admissions commence from May.
Procedure: Admission form and personal interview.



Comprises of 17 rooms to accommodate 136 students. The Chhatralay provides facilities for the holistic development of students. The modern and hygienic kitchen facilities provide hot, vegetarian meals. The Chhatralay also has a general store that provides stationery and consumer goods at subsidized rates.



To help attain academic excellence tuition is given to all students at no extra cost.



To entertain the students and encourage bonhomie the Chhatralay’s facilities and grounds are very good. The students play cricket, volleyball, kabbadi, khokho, carom, chess and table tennis.



The library is equipped with textbooks, story books and general knowledge books. Besides the dorm facilities, two reading halls provide an exclusive environment for concentrated study.



Computer Center
A computer center for the convenience of all students of the hostel, for use at anytime they want. This ensures that children become more computer literate by practising even in their free time.



Extra curricular social activities, such as, collection of relief materials for the earthquake-affected, drought- and flood-affected, and programs for de-addiction, are carried out regularly under the guidance of sadhus. Visits to holy places are organized, and festivals like Holi, Diwali and Janmashtani are celebrated in traditional style. Music and cultural programs are organized to channelise the creative energy of the students.

To de-addict the tribals the Chhataralay’s students regularly visit the surrounding villages. Clothes distribution to tribals is carried out regularly.

Through the inspiration and efforts of Pramukh Swami Maharaj and the resident sadhus, the Chhatralay has earned a unique name in the hostel community in the Surat district. It has welcomed many social and political dignitaries. Some of their opinions of dignitaries are as follows:
