A major concern for the BAPS Community Care Team, based at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Neasden, London, has been the increasing marginalisation of the elderly in our modern society. Inspired by the Hindu ethos of caring for and respecting senior community members, BAPS has worked hard to appreciate the valuable role of the elderly and transmit this awareness to others, especially the young.
To actualise this spirit, BAPS runs an on-going ‘Care for the Elderly’ campaign. Volunteers from the BAPS Community Care Team have joined up with young members from the BAPS Children’s Forum to visit the elderly in care homes, nursing homes and hospital wards around the UK.
The project has received an overwhelming response from both the visited and the visitors. The elders enjoy a fun-packed day of games and cultural entertainment with energetic children, relieving any feelings of isolation and boredom. The young learn to effectively interact with elders and, more importantly, grow from the joy and rewards of bringing joy to others.
In recent years, the Team and children from BAPS have visited over 40 homes and geriatric hospital wards reaching out to hundreds of senior citizens and bringing a smile to their forlorn faces.
