Celebrating "Inspirational Hindu Women"

BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Leicester

Saturday 28 February 2009

In the lead up to International Women’s Day (8 March) established by The United Nations as a global date to recognise women's achievements, a unique and successful cultural event presented by the women of BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Leicester, took place on Saturday 28 February 2009 at the Prajapati Community Centre in Leicester. Attended by over 1300 women, the cultural event showcased the amazing strength of character, courage and devotion of devotees such as Meerabai and Zamkhuba and how their lives still inspire our young people today. A cast of over forty five ranging from young schoolgirls through to pensioners, took the audience through a musical presentation of sketches, devotional songs and traditional dances which left the audience inspired and elevated.

The Women's Wing of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha contributed in creating a programme celebrating the crucial role that women have and are playing in preserving Hindu Heritage, Culture and Values. The event aimed to empower women and spread awareness to the wider community about the range of women's activities taking place at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, Leicester. These activities which include charity work, sports and recreational activities, hosting health seminars and organising youth conferences to name just a few, were all displayed through an insightful exhibition.

The evening was graced by distinguished guests including the Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Leicester Cllr. Dr. Manjula Sood, Baroness Sandip Verma of Leicester and Ms Maureen Milgram Forrest, Founding Chair of LeicestHerday Trust. The Lord Mayor in her address stated, “The women of BAPS are playing an integral role in social cohesion with the organisation of a cultural event by women for women.” Following the performances, all those attending were treated to a sumptuous vegetarian meal.
