  Living with Swamishri :

17 April 1999 : Saturday (Vaishakh sud 2) , Surat

  • As Swamishri arrived for his morning puja, two fat youths were standing by the stage. "Who is the heaviest out of you two?" Swamishri enquired with humor.
Dipak replied, "He is greater in weight (heavier) than I and I am greater in doing bhajan (devotion)."
Swamishri responded, "So Dipak thinks he is greater!"
Dipak added, "In terms of bhajan (devotion)."
Swamishri, "...One should remain humble in bhajan.
" Even in lighter moments Swamishri taught the youths the lesson of true devotion...

18 April 1999 : Sunday (Vaishakh sud 3) , Sultanabad

  • In the evening assembly Swamishri emphasized the importance of the Sunday assembly, "By the wish and instruction of Yogiji Maharaj, the Sunday assembly is conducted at all Satsang centers in the world. Yogiji Maharaj used to say that one should forgo a profit of Rs.25,000 and attend the Sunday assembly. We have glory and importance for Rs.25,000 whereas the holy sadhu has glory and importance for God.

"One feels that he (Yogiji Maharaj) did not understand mundane matters because he had renounced the world and became a sadhu at a young age. But one will get mundane things in life. You will find someone who will bless you with money, even someone who will bless you with a child and worldly happiness but you will not find one who will give you God..."
  • While having dinner at 8.15 p.m. a devotee told Swamishri about the tragic death of a businessman in Surat: "... He had his annual balance sheet made for the financial year ending this March. From this he found he had a loss of Rs.11 lakh. Consequently, in a fit of anger he started beating up his partner. Then he beat up the watchman of his office complex. Eventually, the police restrained him but he had lost all sanity because of the shock, and then he died."

Swamishri, to a youth seated before him, said, "Be careful that you do not get a shock!" Youth: "That man did not have someone like you. Since we have you, there’s nothing to worry." Swamishri: "We should always nourish the thought that ‘Nothing is ours’. One who does not have the refuge of God comes to such an end. We have to understand that nothing is ours. We did not bring anything when we were born. That businessman did not live to spend the large amount of money he had and died for Rs.11 lakh. But if one has Satsang then one feels, ‘Let’s go to Swami and relieve ourselves’..."

21 April 1999 : Wednesday (Vaishakh sud 6), Surat

  • After the opening of two modern libraries and a science laboratory at an educational complex, Swamishri blessed the gathering, saying, "... There is a need for an increase in educational activities in our society, but coupled with education one equally needs moral education. In our ancient Gurukul system, the students were taught spirituality along with their mundane education. If you have a balance of these two then there will be a holistic development. Just as when someone does not have one eye then it is a loss. Similarly, one requires two things - spiritual knowledge and educational knowledge!"
  • After performing the murti-pratishtha ceremony of a new Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Mandir at Kadodara, Swamishri spoke eloquently on the importance and effect of mandirs, "... When we visited Mauritius we saw that Indians, who had left India several hundred years ago, were following the Hindu dharma. Their forefathers had established 300 mandirs for the preservation of Hindu dharma. Today we find that the Hindu dharma is still being practiced. They have faith and read the Ramayana.

"People from Uttar Pradesh and South India had migrated several hundred years ago to Trinidad. They built mandirs there and preserved their dharma. One should have dharma firmly in one’s life. Those who have dharma in their lives feel they should build mandirs..."
  Gems From Swamishri :
  • The glory and power of Satsang is that one who comes to Satsang achieves progress, becomes pious and pure and God-conscious.
  • By obeying God’s instructions one achieves the highest status.
  • Just as one eats every day and uses one’s home daily, likewise one should chant the name of God daily.
