In ancient times Bhrugu Rishi had an ashram by the banks of river Narmada and established a town which was known as 'Bhrugukachh' in the Puranas. About 2000 C.E. a Greek traveller called it 'Bharuachh' which later got corrupted into 'Bharuch'.
