the search for meaning and joy.

Within the invisible depths of

each soul there is a yearning.

A need to know ‘Why?’.

‘Why do we live?’,

‘Why do we experience problems?’,

‘Why are we travellers on the

journey of life?’.

Question

If we try to be meek in Satsang there is always the fear that people will take advantage of us. If we become more assertive, we fear that we may insult a devotee. What should we do?
Answer

Swamishri : We should be authoritative in society; if someone challenges us we should answer him in an appropriate manner. If we cannot reply then we should step aside, but never allow yourself to be suppressed by anyone. Whereas in Satsang we should always behave as a servant. We should do samagam of those people from whom we can learn, who will encourage us to become more firm in our niyams and follow our dharma.
However, people are not the same. So those people who we feel have nothing to offer us, we should simply bow to them and say ‘Jai Swaminarayan’, but don’t keep their company. But remember, in Satsang we are smaller than everyone else. So what if they take advantage of you? You should always remain a servant in Satsang. And be cautious, a person may praise us and look after all our needs, but if he discourages us from following our niyam-dharma, we should never do his samagam.
