BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha Appeal, India Earthquake 2001

BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha is actively serving earthquake victims through relief kitchens, food packets distributions, shelters, emergency necessities of daily living and medical aid.

Relief Kitchens
Serving three freshly-cooked hot meals every day at the following centres:

  • Bhuj (2 locations)
  • Anjar
  • Bhachao
  • Gandhidham (2 locations)
  • Rapar (2 locations)
  • Khavda
  • Morbi
  • Surendranagar
  • Amdavad (3 locations)
  • Rajkot
  • Gandhinagar

Total of over 27,000 to 29,000 people served daily at relief kitchens in Kachchh District.
Total of over 12,000 people served daily at relief kitchens outside Kachchh District.

Distribution of Food Packets and Other Emergency Necessities
Pre-packed freshly-cooked food, snacks and drinking water pouches are being distributed daily to towns and villages in the districts and sub-districts of :

Bhuj-Mundra-Nakhatrana: Bhuj, Madhapur, Chakarkotada, Bhujodi, Haripar, Kukana, Mirazapur, Sukhpur, Mankuva, Baladiya, Kodaki, Makhana, Nathrudi, Tankanasar, Kamaguna, Laxmipur, Kalyanpar, Bhadli, Thawada, Vithan, Dhawada, Kotada, Ratnal, Hajapar, Haroodi, Mota reha, Jambudi, Kandara, Boladi, Lodi,Traya, Umedpur, Berada, Jikadi, Paddhar, Dhaneti, Dagala, Mokhana, Kanaiya -2
Khavda: Khavda,Tugga, Kuleria, Jamkundariya, Juna, Dhorara, Paiya, Ghodpar, Khari

Morbi: Barawala, Biliya, Kantipur, Modpar, Bagathala

Jamnagar: Bhadra, Bhimkata, Manamora, Utbet Shampur, Juna Bela, Nava Bela, Kothariya, Fadsar, Ranjitpar, Balambha, Jodiya

A total of 108 towns and villages are being provided with daily relief aid.

Shelter
Possibility of further tremors and risk of re-entering damaged building has raised the need for shelters. BAPS is providing shelters for victims at:

  • Amdavad - in the suburbs of Vastrapur-Satellite, Paldi, Shahibaug, Ranip, Chanakyapuri.
  • Bhuj - tents have been set up
  • Morbi - in 5 surrounding villages


Medical Aid
Medical aid is being provided by experienced doctors to diagnose and treat the victims.

Relief Collection Centres
Supplies for the relief work operations are being collected at BAPS centres throughout India. Collected supplies are transported to relief aid centres as quickly as possible by road, sea and air.

Volunteer Effort
Inspired by Pramukh Swami Maharaj, 175 sadhus and 4500 volunteers are involved in relief operations in the affected areas throughout Gujarat.

The past experience of BAPS in managing and executing disaster relief operations ensures that all contributions reach the disaster victims in even the most remote villages.

The BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha has served in 21 disaster relief operations in India and abroad, including: famine in Gujarat and Maharashtra (1974), floods in Morbi (1979), famine in Ethiopia (1984), earthquake in Latur (1993), pneumonic plague in Surat (1994) and cyclones in Kandla (1998) and Orissa (1999).
