Bhadarva Sud 11th is known both as Parivartini and Jal Zilani Ekadashi.

       Origin & Sentiments

  • While Lord Vishnu slept in Bali Raja's kingdom in Sutal during chaturmaas, He turned sideways from his supine position on this day. This turning is known as "Parivartan," hence Parivartini Ekadashi.
  • On this day too, Shri Krishna took the Gopis boating on the river Yamuna. As 'fare' for the ride, he asked them for yogurt. Hence it is customary to donate yogurt on this day.
  • An import from this is that: Just as the Gopis surrendered implicitly to Shri Krishna, the aspirant is inspired to surrender himself to the Lord and Guru, to cross the ocean of Samsara.

Ritual
Devotees observe a waterless fast.

On this day, they take the small murti "Lalji," of the Lord and the clay murti of Ganeshji to a river bank or lake shore. Here, both are offered pujan, arti and "thaal" five times. After each pujan, both are taken for a short boat ride. During these boating rituals, devotees sing kirtans which express sentiments of "sharnaagati" - surrenderance to the Lord and Guru - in delivering them across the ocean of Samsara. The Lord is thanked too for rain and brimming the rivers and lakes

After the fifth pujan, Ganeshji is submerged (ref. article on Ganesh Chaturthi).

Chopped cucumber pieces and "ladus" are offered as prasad. The former are also sprinkled into the water, for the merit of aquatic creatures.
